Acrylic (PMMA)
Half the weight of glass, twice the clarity. Acrylic is the material behind Malaysia's most eye-catching signboards, stunning display counters, and sleek machine guards. Find out why fabricators and designers consistently reach for acrylic — and which grade is right for your application.

Overview
Polymethyl Methacrylate, commonly known as Acrylic or by the popular brand name Perspex, is a transparent thermoplastic celebrated for its exceptional optical clarity, brilliant surface finish, and outstanding weather resistance. Often described as a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass, acrylic combines aesthetic appeal with practical engineering performance — making it one of the most versatile materials across both industrial and commercial applications.
Acrylic transmits up to 92% of visible light, outperforming standard glass in optical clarity while weighing only half as much. It is highly workable — easy to cut, drill, bend, laser cut, and polish to a glass-like finish — making it a favourite among fabricators, signage makers, display designers, and industrial manufacturers alike.
In Malaysia's commercial landscape, acrylic is everywhere — from the illuminated signboards lining every shopping mall and shophouse to the display counters in retail outlets and the protective machine guards on factory floors. Its combination of visual appeal, durability, and ease of fabrication makes it a consistently high-demand material across a remarkably wide range of industries.
Available Grades
For display cases, optical applications, and anything requiring the best possible surface finish, Cast Acrylic is the preferred choice. For thermoforming, bending, and fabrication applications, Extruded Acrylic offers better workability and consistency.
Key Properties
Temperature Resistance
Acrylic performs reliably across a moderate temperature range, well suited to most ambient industrial and commercial environments.
Continuous service temperature: Up to 70–80°C
Thermoforming temperature: 150–180°C — acrylic softens and can be shaped at these temperatures
Low temperature performance: Remains clear and dimensionally stable down to -40°C, though impact resistance reduces at low temperatures
Not recommended for: High heat environments above 80°C continuously — consider Polycarbonate (PC) for higher temperature transparency requirements
Note: Acrylic is more sensitive to heat than PC — avoid proximity to high heat sources such as halogen lighting at close range
How Acrylic Compares to Similar Materials
Acrylic vs Polycarbonate — This is the most common comparison in the industry. Acrylic wins on optical clarity, surface hardness, UV resistance, and cost. Polycarbonate wins decisively on impact resistance and heat resistance. As a rule of thumb — if aesthetics and clarity are the priority, choose Acrylic. If safety, impact protection, and toughness are the priority, choose Polycarbonate.
Acrylic vs Glass — Acrylic is half the weight of glass, far easier to cut and fabricate, and virtually shatter-proof by comparison. While glass offers superior scratch resistance and heat tolerance, acrylic is the practical choice for most display, signage, and light industrial applications where handling, fabrication, and installation ease matter.
Common Applications
Acrylic's unmatched combination of clarity, workability, and weather resistance makes it one of the most universally used transparent materials across commercial and industrial sectors:
Signage and display — backlit signboards, LED light boxes, shopfront lettering, retail display stands
Retail and commercial — display counters, product showcase boxes, jewellery and watch displays, point of sale displays
Interior design and architecture — decorative panels, partitions, furniture components, light diffusers
Industrial — machine sight glasses, light covers, protective screens, instrument panels
Aquariums and tanks — fish tanks, water feature panels, aquarium viewing panels
Medical and laboratory — protective screens, sample display cases, cleanroom panels
Advertising — illuminated channel letters, lightbox faces, outdoor display boards
