Overview
Neoprene, scientifically known as Polychloroprene or Chloroprene Rubber (CR), is one of the world's first synthetic rubbers — developed by DuPont chemists in the early 1930s as a more versatile and chemically resistant alternative to Natural Rubber. Nearly a century later, Neoprene remains one of the most widely specified and trusted synthetic elastomers in industrial engineering — valued for its outstanding balance of weather resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical performance, and thermal stability that no single natural or synthetic rubber can fully replicate at its price point.
What fundamentally distinguishes Neoprene from Natural Rubber and many other synthetic elastomers is its remarkable versatility across a broad range of challenging environments. The chlorine atoms incorporated into its polymer backbone provide inherent flame retardancy, significantly improved oil and chemical resistance, and exceptional resistance to ozone, UV radiation, and weathering — properties that Natural Rubber and many other elastomers simply cannot match without significant compounding modifications.
In Malaysia's industrial landscape — spanning marine, construction, automotive, electrical, and general engineering sectors — Neoprene is among the most consistently demanded elastomeric materials. Its combination of outdoor durability, oil resistance, flame retardancy, and reliable mechanical performance makes it the go-to synthetic rubber wherever Natural Rubber's limitations in chemical and weather resistance become a practical concern. From the marine industry along Johor's extensive coastline to the rapidly expanding manufacturing sector across Iskandar Malaysia, Neoprene's versatility ensures consistent demand across a remarkably wide range of applications.
Available Grades

For general industrial engineering, sealing, and fabrication applications, Standard Neoprene is the most widely specified and cost-effective grade.
Key Properties

Temperature Resistance
Neoprene offers reliable performance across a moderate to good temperature range — significantly better than Natural Rubber in heat resistance.
Continuous service temperature: Up to 120°C — superior to Natural Rubber (80°C) and PU (100°C)
Short term peak temperature: Up to 140°C for brief periods
Low temperature performance: Retains flexibility and sealing performance down to -40°C — suitable for cold storage, refrigeration, and outdoor applications in varying climates
Not recommended for: Continuous high heat applications above 120°C or steam environments — consider Silicone Rubber for higher temperature elastomeric requirements up to 200°C
Important note: Neoprene's combination of -40°C to 120°C operating range makes it one of the most temperature versatile synthetic rubbers available — well suited to Malaysia's tropical climate and the wide temperature variations encountered in industrial process environments
How Neoprene Compares to Similar Materials

Neoprene vs Natural Rubber — Natural Rubber offers superior resilience, dynamic fatigue resistance, and cost-effectiveness for applications in controlled environments. Neoprene outperforms Natural Rubber decisively in oil resistance, weather resistance, flame retardancy, and chemical resistance — making it the necessary upgrade for any outdoor, marine, or chemically exposed application where Natural Rubber would rapidly degrade.
Neoprene vs PU — PU outperforms Neoprene in abrasion resistance, load bearing capacity, and tear strength — making it the superior choice for mechanical wear applications. Neoprene outperforms PU in weather resistance, flame retardancy, seawater resistance, and chemical resistance — making it the preferred choice for outdoor sealing, marine, and chemically exposed applications.
Neoprene vs Silicone — Silicone offers dramatically superior heat resistance up to 200°C, excellent chemical resistance, and outstanding low temperature flexibility — but at a significant cost premium. Neoprene offers better mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and oil resistance at a more accessible price point. For general industrial sealing and outdoor applications below 120°C, Neoprene is the more cost-effective choice. For food contact, medical, and high-temperature applications, Silicone is the necessary upgrade.
Common Applications
Neoprene's outstanding combination of weather resistance, oil resistance, flame retardancy, and broad temperature performance makes it one of the most universally applicable synthetic rubbers across Malaysian industrial and commercial sectors:
Marine and offshore — dock fenders, hatch seals, boat hull protective strips, underwater seals, offshore equipment gaskets, yacht components
Construction — expansion joint seals, bridge bearings, waterproofing membranes, vibration isolation pads, weatherstripping
Electrical and cable — cable jacketing, electrical insulation, switchgear seals, transformer gaskets
Automotive — engine mount pads, hose covers, door seals, weatherstripping, vibration damping components
Industrial sealing — pump seals, valve gaskets, pipe flange gaskets, industrial hose liners
HVAC and refrigeration — refrigerant resistant seals, pipe insulation, vibration isolators, flexible duct connectors
General fabrication — protective padding, anti-vibration mounts, impact absorbing buffers, machine mounts
