Overview
One of the most popular and recognisable engineering plastics in the world is polyamide, commonly known as nylon. Created by DuPont in the 1930s, nylon transformed manufacturing by providing a material that combined the advantages of plastic. They are lightweight and corrosion-free with remarkable mechanical strength, toughness, and wear resistance. Nylon, which was first created by DuPont in the 1930s, transformed manufacturing by providing a material that combined the advantages of plastic's light weight and corrosion resistance with remarkable mechanical strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
Nylon strikes an outstanding balance between strength, flexibility, and durability. Making it one of the most versatile engineering plastics available across a remarkably broad range of industries and applications. Its ability to absorb shock and vibration, combined with its natural lubricity and excellent wear resistance, makes it particularly well-suited for moving mechanical components, structural parts, and wear surfaces that demand consistent long-term performance.
In Malaysia's industrial landscape, Nylon is among the most consistently demanded engineering plastics. Stocked and specified by machine shops, heavy machinery builders, automotive fabricators, food processing equipment manufacturers, and general engineering workshops across the country. It is often the first material engineers reach for when a tough, reliable, and cost-effective engineering plastic is needed for mechanical applications.
Available Grades
For general engineering applications, PA6 is the most commonly specified and cost-effective grade. For higher strength and heat resistance requirements, PA66 is preferred. In Malaysia's humid tropical climate, PA12 or Oil Filled PA6 are recommended for precision components where dimensional stability is critical.
Key Properties
Temperature Resistance
Nylon performs reliably across a moderate to good temperature range, suitable for most industrial environments in Malaysia.
Continuous service temperature: Up to 100°C (PA6) / 120°C (PA66)
Short term peak temperature: Up to 150°C (PA66)
Low temperature performance: Retains toughness and impact resistance down to -40°C — performs well in cold storage and refrigeration environments
Not recommended for: Continuous high heat applications above 120°C — consider PEEK or PPS for higher temperature mechanical performance requirements
Important note: Nylon absorbs moisture from the environment, which can cause dimensional changes over time — particularly relevant in Malaysia's humid tropical climate. For precision components where tight tolerances must be maintained, PA12 or POM are more dimensionally stable alternatives
Chemical Resistance
Nylon offers good chemical resistance for most general industrial environments, though it is sensitive to strong acids and certain solvents.
For applications involving strong acids, alkalis, or where moisture absorption is a concern, consider POM for precision components or PP / PVDF for chemical handling applications.
How Nylon Compares to Similar Materials
Nylon vs POM — The most common comparison in Malaysian machine shops. POM wins on dimensional stability, machinability, and moisture resistance — making it the better choice for precision components with tight tolerances. Nylon wins on impact resistance and shock absorption — making it the better choice for components subject to sudden loads, vibration, and impact. In humid environments like Malaysia, POM is generally the safer choice for precision work.
Nylon vs PEEK — PEEK offers dramatically superior heat resistance, chemical resistance, and mechanical performance at elevated temperatures — but at a significant cost premium. Nylon is the practical, cost-effective choice for general engineering applications below 120°C. PEEK is reserved for the most demanding high-temperature and chemically aggressive environments.
Nylon vs UHMW-PE — Both offer good wear resistance and impact toughness at accessible price points. Nylon has higher mechanical strength and better heat resistance. UHMW-PE has lower moisture absorption, better chemical resistance, and superior abrasion resistance for heavy duty wear applications. For structural mechanical components, Nylon is preferred. For liners, wear strips, and high abrasion surfaces, UHMW-PE is the better choice.
Common Applications
Nylon's outstanding combination of strength, toughness, wear resistance, and cost-effectiveness makes it one of the most universally applied engineering plastics across Malaysian industry:
General engineering and fabrication — gears, sprockets, pulleys, rollers, and structural brackets
Heavy machinery — bushings, wear pads, slide plates, impact absorbing components, crane pads
Automotive — engine bay components, bushings, cable guides, wear resistant brackets
Food processing — conveyor components, wear strips, guide rails, and food contact parts (FDA compliant grades available)
Marine and offshore — fender pads, wear plates, dock components, corrosion resistant structural parts
Material handling — conveyor rollers, guide rails, chute liners, hopper wear liners
Electrical — cable management components, insulation spacers, terminal blocks
