Overview
Polyether Ether Ketone, universally known as PEEK, stands at the absolute pinnacle of engineering thermoplastics. Developed by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in the late 1970s and commercialised in the 1980s, PEEK rapidly established itself as the benchmark high-performance engineering plastic — delivering an extraordinary combination of mechanical strength, thermal stability, chemical resistance, and dimensional precision that no other thermoplastic can match across such a broad range of demanding conditions.
PEEK is a semi-crystalline aromatic thermoplastic that maintains exceptional mechanical properties across a continuous service temperature range extending to 250°C — far beyond the capabilities of any other common engineering thermoplastic. It combines this thermal stability with outstanding chemical resistance, inherent flame retardancy, excellent fatigue resistance, and the ability to be machined to extremely tight tolerances — making it the material of choice wherever engineering performance requirements exceed what conventional engineering plastics like POM, Nylon, or even PVDF can reliably deliver.
In Malaysia's rapidly expanding semiconductor, aerospace, medical, and precision engineering sectors — particularly across Johor's growing high-technology industrial corridor — PEEK is increasingly specified for the most demanding applications where component failure is not an option. Its exceptional combination of properties commands a significant price premium over conventional engineering plastics, but in applications where reliability, precision, and performance under extreme conditions are paramount, PEEK consistently delivers a level of performance that justifies its position as the king of engineering thermoplastics.
Available Grades

For semiconductor, medical, and chemical applications requiring maximum purity and chemical resistance, Virgin PEEK is the standard specification. For structural components under high mechanical load, PEEK GF30 or CF30 deliver significantly enhanced stiffness and strength. For bearing and wear applications, PEEK BG provides optimised tribological performance.
Key Properties

Temperature Resistance
PEEK's thermal performance is unmatched among engineering thermoplastics — maintaining exceptional mechanical properties at temperatures that would cause virtually every other engineering plastic to deform, creep, or fail.
Continuous service temperature: Up to 250°C — the highest of any common engineering thermoplastic, significantly exceeding PVDF (150°C), POM (110°C), and Nylon (120°C)
Short term peak temperature: Up to 300°C for brief periods without structural failure
Low temperature performance: Retains excellent mechanical properties and impact resistance down to -65°C — suitable for cryogenic adjacent applications
Thermal stability: Exceptional long-term thermal stability with minimal creep, dimensional change, or property degradation over extended service at elevated temperatures — critical for precision components in high-temperature environments
Not recommended for: Continuous exposure above 260°C — at these temperatures even PEEK begins to degrade. For ultra-extreme temperature applications, consider ceramic or metal alternatives
How PEEK Compares to Similar Materials

PEEK vs POM — POM is the benchmark precision engineering plastic for applications below 110°C — excellent machinability, dimensional stability, and cost-effectiveness. PEEK is specified when operating temperatures, chemical exposure, or mechanical demands exceed POM's capabilities. The cost premium of PEEK over POM is significant — typically 5 to 10 times higher — so PEEK is reserved for applications where POM genuinely falls short.
PEEK vs PVDF — Both are premium engineering materials widely specified in semiconductor manufacturing, but serve different roles. PVDF excels in chemical handling fabrication — tanks, piping, and wet benches — where its weldability and lower cost are advantageous. PEEK is specified for precision machined structural and mechanical components requiring higher temperature resistance, greater mechanical strength, and superior fatigue performance under load.
PEEK vs PPS — PPS offers similar temperature resistance and chemical resistance at a lower cost, making it a viable alternative for some applications. PEEK outperforms PPS in mechanical strength, impact resistance, and fatigue resistance — and offers broader chemical resistance. For the most demanding high-performance applications, PEEK remains the superior choice despite its higher cost.
Common Applications
PEEK's unmatched combination of thermal stability, mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and dimensional precision makes it irreplaceable across Malaysia's most demanding and highest-value industrial applications:
Semiconductor manufacturing — wafer handling components, precision jigs and fixtures, chemical resistant structural components, high-temperature process equipment, pump and valve components in aggressive chemical environments
Aerospace and defence — structural components, bearing retainers, seal housings, fuel system components, high-temperature structural brackets
Medical and dental — implantable medical devices, surgical instruments, dental components, sterilisable equipment housings — PEEK's biocompatibility makes it one of very few plastics approved for implantable medical applications
Precision engineering — high-temperature bearings, bushings, wear pads, gears, and seal components operating beyond conventional engineering plastic temperature limits
Oil and gas — downhole drilling components, chemical injection system parts, high-pressure seal components, valve seats in aggressive chemical environments
Automotive — high-temperature under-bonnet components, transmission parts, fuel system components, bearing cages
Food processing — FDA compliant food contact components in high-temperature processing environments, steam sterilisable equipment parts
