Overview

Polyoxymethylene, commonly known as POM or by the brand name Delrin, is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic engineering plastic renowned for its exceptional combination of stiffness, dimensional stability, and natural lubricity. It is one of the most widely specified engineering plastics in precision manufacturing, offering metal-like performance at a fraction of the weight and cost.

POM is available in two primary grades:
POM-H (Homopolymer)
POM-C (Copolymer)
Each with slightly different characteristics suited to different applications.

Available Grades

For general engineering applications, POM-C is the more commonly recommended grade due to its consistent material structure and improved chemical resistance. For applications requiring maximum stiffness and fatigue strength, POM-H (Delrin) is preferred.

Key Properties

Temperature Resistance

POM performs reliably across a wide temperature range, making it suitable for both indoor industrial environments and moderately elevated temperature applications.

  • Continuous service temperature: 90°C (POM-C) to 110°C (POM-H)

  • Short term peak temperature: Up to 140°C

  • Low temperature performance: Retains toughness and impact resistance down to -40°C

  • Not recommended for: High heat environments above 120°C continuously — consider PEEK or PPS for such applications

How POM Compares to Similar Materials

POM vs Nylon — POM is the better choice when dimensional stability is critical, especially in humid environments like Malaysia. Nylon absorbs moisture and can swell slightly over time, affecting tight tolerances. POM stays stable.

POM vs PEEK — For applications below 120°C, POM is the more cost-effective choice with comparable machinability. PEEK is specified when operating temperatures exceed POM's limits or when exposure to aggressive chemicals is required.

Common Applications

POM is used extensively across industries wherever precision, low friction, and reliable wear resistance are required:

  • Precision engineering — gears, sprockets, cams, and bearing housings

  • Automation and conveyor systems — wear strips, guide rails, rollers, and chain guides

  • Semiconductor manufacturing — wafer handling components, precision jigs and fixtures

  • Automotive — fuel system components, door lock mechanisms, seatbelt buckles

  • Food processing — conveyor components, cutting guides (FDA compliant grades available)

  • General fabrication — bushings, spacers, valve seats, pump components
