PP (Polypropylene)

When acids, alkalis, and corrosive chemicals are part of the daily environment, most materials fail. Polypropylene doesn't. Discover why PP is the most trusted material for chemical tanks, semiconductor wet benches, and acid handling systems — and how to choose the right grade for your application.

Overview

Polypropylene, commonly abbreviated as PP, is a versatile semi-crystalline thermoplastic widely regarded as one of the best chemically resistant engineering plastics available at an accessible price point. Its exceptional resistance to a broad spectrum of acids, alkalis, and organic solvents makes it the material of choice in industries where chemical exposure is a constant challenge.

PP strikes an ideal balance between chemical durability, mechanical strength, and ease of fabrication. It can be easily cut, welded, and formed using standard hot air welding techniques, making it highly practical for tank fabrication, ducting, and structural chemical handling components.

In Malaysia's rapidly growing semiconductor and chemical processing industries, PP is among the most heavily specified engineering plastics — particularly for ultra-pure water (UPW) systems, chemical baths, and acid handling equipment.

Available Grades

For chemical tank fabrication and ducting, PP-H is the most commonly specified grade. For applications requiring better impact toughness, PP-C is recommended.

Key Properties

Temperature Resistance

PP offers reliable performance across a moderate temperature range, making it well suited for most industrial environments in Malaysia.

  • Continuous service temperature: Up to 100°C (PP-H)

  • Short term peak temperature: Up to 120°C

  • Low temperature performance: PP-H becomes brittle below 0°C — for cold environments PP-C is preferred

  • Not recommended for: Applications continuously exceeding 100°C — consider PVDF or PEEK for higher temperature chemical resistance requirements

How PP Compares to Similar Materials

PP vs PVDF — Both offer excellent chemical resistance, but PVDF handles higher temperatures and is specified for ultra-high purity semiconductor applications where extractables must be minimised. PP is the cost-effective choice for general chemical handling where ultra-purity is not critical.

PP vs PTFE — PTFE offers broader chemical resistance and higher temperature performance, but PP is far easier to fabricate, weld, and shape into tanks and structures. For fabricated chemical vessels, PP is almost always the practical choice.

PP vs PVC — PP outperforms PVC in both heat resistance and chemical resistance, particularly against alkalis. PVC is cheaper but falls short in more demanding chemical environments. PP is the natural upgrade from PVC for serious chemical handling applications.

Common Applications

PP's combination of chemical resistance, weldability, and cost-effectiveness makes it one of the most versatile materials in industrial fabrication:

  • Semiconductor manufacturing — chemical bath tanks, acid handling trays, UPW system components, wet bench fabrication

  • Electroplating and surface treatment — plating tanks, chemical sumps, ventilation ducting

  • Chemical processing — storage tanks, pipe fittings, reaction vessels, pump housings

  • Laboratory equipment — chemical containment trays, storage cabinets, fume hood liners

  • Food and beverage — food grade containers, processing equipment (FDA compliant grades)

  • Water treatment — filter housings, chemical dosing tanks, pipe systems
