Overview
Polyurethane, commonly known as PU or Urethane, is one of the most versatile and widely applied engineering materials in modern industry — occupying a unique performance space that bridges the gap between rigid engineering plastics and conventional rubber. Unlike most materials that are either rigid or flexible, Polyurethane can be precisely engineered across an extraordinarily wide hardness range — from soft, gel-like formulations to hard, rigid structural materials — while consistently delivering exceptional load bearing capacity, abrasion resistance, and resilience that neither conventional rubber nor rigid plastics can match simultaneously.
First developed by Otto Bayer in Germany in the late 1930s, Polyurethane has evolved into one of the most technically sophisticated and commercially important polymer families in existence — finding application in everything from precision industrial rollers and mining wear components to medical devices, automotive parts, and high-performance seals and gaskets. Its ability to combine rubber-like flexibility and resilience with plastic-like load bearing strength and abrasion resistance makes it genuinely unique among engineering materials.
In Malaysia's manufacturing and industrial landscape, PU sheet and rod are consistently demanded across a remarkably broad range of industries — from precision engineering workshops fabricating custom wear components to heavy machinery builders requiring tough, resilient impact absorbing pads and rollers. With Johor's rapidly expanding industrial base driving growing demand for reliable, high-performance wear and sealing materials, PU occupies an important and versatile position in any comprehensive engineering material supply catalogue.
Available Grades

For general industrial engineering applications, Ester Based Standard PU in Shore A 70–90 is the most commonly specified grade. For wet or outdoor environments, Ether Based PU offers superior resistance to moisture and hydrolysis.
Key Properties

Temperature Resistance
PU performs reliably across a moderate temperature range suitable for most industrial applications in Malaysia.
Continuous service temperature: Up to 80–100°C depending on grade and formulation
Short term peak temperature: Up to 120°C for brief periods
Low temperature performance: Retains flexibility and resilience down to -30°C (ester grade) and -50°C (ether grade) — superior low temperature flexibility compared to many engineering plastics
Not recommended for: Continuous high heat applications above 100°C or steam environments — consider Silicone Rubber for higher temperature elastomeric applications
Important note: Ester based PU should be avoided in continuously wet or high humidity environments as it is susceptible to hydrolytic degradation over time — specify Ether Based PU for any application involving prolonged water or moisture exposure
How PU Compares to Similar Materials

PU vs Natural Rubber — Natural Rubber offers better resilience and dynamic fatigue resistance at a lower cost, but PU decisively outperforms it in abrasion resistance, load bearing capacity, and oil resistance. For high wear applications — conveyor rollers, wheels, mining wear liners — PU is the clear choice. For dynamic sealing and vibration isolation where cost is a priority, Natural Rubber remains competitive.
PU vs Neoprene — Neoprene offers better chemical and weather resistance than PU, making it the preferred choice for outdoor and chemically exposed sealing applications. PU outperforms Neoprene decisively in abrasion resistance, load bearing capacity, and tear strength — making it the superior choice for mechanical wear applications.
PU vs Silicone — Silicone offers dramatically superior heat resistance and excellent chemical resistance at a higher cost. PU outperforms Silicone in abrasion resistance, tear strength, and load bearing capacity. For high-temperature sealing and food contact applications, Silicone is preferred. For mechanical wear, rollers, and load-bearing components, PU is the superior and more cost-effective choice.
Common Applications
PU's extraordinary combination of abrasion resistance, load bearing capacity, resilience, and wide hardness range makes it one of the most universally applicable engineering elastomers across Malaysian industry:
Precision engineering — custom wear pads, impact absorbing buffers, precision rollers, guide wheels, and mechanical stops
Material handling and conveyor systems — conveyor rollers, drive wheels, wear strips, impact absorbing pads, chute liners
Heavy machinery — hydraulic cylinder seals, machine mounts, vibration damping pads, heavy duty bumpers
Mining and construction — wear liners, screening panels, pump liners, hydrocyclone liners
Marine — dock fenders, propeller shaft seals, underwater wear components, vessel impact protection
Automotive — suspension bushings, bump stops, jounce bumpers, door seals, NVH damping components
Printing and packaging — printing rollers, drive rollers, nip rollers, feed rollers
