Overview

PVDF, or polyvinylidene fluoride, is a high-performance semi-crystalline fluoropolymer that holds a special and important place in the hierarchy of engineering plastics. PVDF offers an exceptional combination of chemical resistance, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and fabricability that no other single material can match at its price point. It sits between the widely available commodity plastics like PP and PVC and the ultra-premium fluoropolymers like PTFE and PFA.

PVDF stands out from other fluoropolymers due to its remarkable combination of mechanical strength and stiffness. Chemical resistance that is comparable to PTFE, and most importantly the ability to be fully welded using conventional hot gas welding techniques. For fabricated chemical handling equipment, such as tanks, piping systems, pump housings, and wet process equipment, PVDF is the preferred material because to its weldability, while PTFE is not suitable for large fabricated structures due to its non-weldability.

PVDF is one of the most important engineering materials in Malaysia's quickly growing semiconductor manufacturing industry. Which is focused in Johor, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur. It is the standard material for wet bench manufacturing, chemical supply lines, acid handling equipment in semiconductor factories, and ultra-pure water (UPW) systems due to its remarkable purity, low extractables, and wide chemical resistance. PVDF is now one of the most sought-after engineering polymers in the area due to the exceptional demand for high-purity process materials brought on by Johor's semiconductor and data center investment boom.

For semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and ultra-pure chemical applications, Virgin PVDF is the only acceptable grade due to its minimal extractables and highest purity. For general chemical processing and fabrication applications, PVDF Homopolymer is the standard industrial specification.

Temperature Resistance

PVDF offers significantly better heat resistance than PP and PVC, making it suitable for demanding elevated temperature chemical handling applications.

  • Continuous service temperature: Up to 135–150°C — substantially higher than PP (100°C) and PVC (60°C)

  • Short term peak temperature: Up to 160°C

  • Low temperature performance: Retains good mechanical properties and chemical resistance down to -40°C — suitable for cold chemical storage and low temperature process environments

  • Not recommended for: Continuous temperatures above 150°C — consider PTFE or PFA for higher temperature fluoropolymer requirements

  • Important note: PVDF's combination of 150°C heat resistance and broad chemical resistance makes it the practical fluoropolymer of choice for the vast majority of semiconductor and chemical processing applications — offering PTFE-like chemical performance with far better mechanical properties and weldability

How PVDF Compares to Similar Materials

PVDF vs PTFE — PTFE offers broader chemical resistance and higher temperature performance, but cannot be welded into fabricated structures and has significantly lower mechanical strength. PVDF is the practical choice for fabricated chemical handling equipment — tanks, piping, and wet benches — where weldability and structural integrity are essential alongside chemical resistance. PTFE is reserved for applications requiring its unique combination of extreme temperature resistance, ultra-low friction, and absolute chemical inertness.

PVDF vs PP — PP is the cost-effective workhorse for general chemical handling, but PVDF outperforms it decisively on heat resistance, chemical resistance against oxidising acids and halogens, UV stability, and dimensional stability. For semiconductor-grade chemical systems and any application involving aggressive chemicals above 100°C, PVDF is the necessary upgrade from PP.

PVDF vs PFA — PFA matches PVDF's chemical resistance and exceeds its temperature performance, but at a significantly higher cost premium and without PVDF's mechanical strength advantage. PFA is specified for the most demanding ultra-pure semiconductor applications and complex moulded geometries. PVDF covers the vast majority of semiconductor and chemical processing requirements at a more accessible price point.

Common Applications

PVDF's unique combination of chemical resistance, thermal stability, mechanical strength, weldability, and high purity makes it the benchmark fluoropolymer for Malaysia's most demanding industrial applications:

  • Semiconductor manufacturing — ultra-pure water (UPW) system components, chemical delivery lines, HF handling systems, wet bench fabrication, wafer processing equipment, chemical storage tanks

  • Chemical processing — acid and alkali handling tanks, pump housings, valve bodies, pipe fittings, chemical containment systems

  • Pharmaceutical and biotechnology — high-purity process piping, bioreactor components, chemical transfer systems, cleanroom equipment

  • Water treatment — membrane filtration housings, chemical dosing systems, high-purity water piping

  • Oil and gas — chemical injection systems, offshore chemical handling, corrosion resistant piping

  • Electrical and electronics — wire and cable insulation for demanding environments, electrical insulation components, ESD control panels

  • Food and beverage — high-purity process piping, chemical resistant contact surfaces, FDA compliant process equipment
